Is the retail giant REWE Group building Germany’s first food-superapp? 🛒📲 Rewe has always been a pioneer in digital offers and now expands its portfolio with investments and partnerships. Last month alone, 2 deals hit the news: 1️⃣ Rewe participated in Flink's new funding round of 150$mn valued at ~900$mn (down about 70% since its peak valuation). With this cash injection, Flink plans to break even in Q2 2025, apparently having reached operational profitability in selected markets already today. Also they plan to open 30 additional warehouses. 2️⃣ Lieferando and Rewe announced a partnership, providing access to 3000 SKUs of Rewe’s assortment via Lieferando’s app, delivered by Lieferando’s courier network. “Rewe Express” promises delivery times of 45 minutes, closing the gap between Rewe’s scheduled delivery and Flink’s ultrafast delivery. With the new offers, Rewe now ticks many boxes that I expect from a food-superapp, combining all things food, and beyond: ✅ Brick and mortar stores ✅ Click and collect ✅ Scheduled delivery ✅ Quick-commerce (via Flink and Lieferando) ✅ Offer promotions in app  ✅ Digital travel agency  ❌ The only piece missing is food delivery. Did you know that the Russian chains X5 and Magnit are also at the frontier of supermarket tech? ➡️ Magnit has integrated AI to monitor inventory at shelf level, ensuring products (including 5000 pharmacy SKUs) are always available for their 30 minute delivery & click and collect. ➡️ Meanwhile, X5 Group deploys smart shopping carts, automatically scanning products for a frictionless checkout. I’ve just talked about why the concept of the food-superapp is so appealing at a conference and will share the takeaways here, soon.

A milestone worth celebrating! Five years ago, our Index Ventures team launched #NotOptional alongside more than 500 CEOs and founders to improve stock options and conditions for employee ownership at European startups. A lot has changed since we started in 2019: The most celebrated win so far goes to Germany 🇩🇪, one of the biggest economies in the world that used to have one of the worst stock options policy in Europe. Last year, the German Parliament voted to turn their failing policy into one of the best in the world. 10 other countries also updated their stock options legislation: the UK 🇬🇧, Portugal 🇵🇹, France 🇫🇷, Austria 🇦🇹, Czechia 🇨🇿, Spain 🇪🇸, Latvia 🇱🇻, Lithuania 🇱🇹, Greece 🇬🇷, and the Netherlands 🇳🇱. 7 countries now have policies that match or exceed the US: Germany, France, Portugal, the UK, Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia. Only one, Estonia 🇪🇪, already had a policy better than the US in 2019. That includes Europe’s three largest economies and the largest VC hubs. There’s still a long way to go for some countries. Finland 🇫🇮, Switzerland 🇨🇭 and Norway 🇳🇴 have the worst policies, followed by the Netherlands (even with updated legislation already), Belgium 🇧🇪 and Denmark 🇩🇰. These are countries with strong tech credentials where the tech innovation flywheel is being hampered. With the help of European entrepreneurs everywhere, we will keep pushing until every single European country’s options policy is at least as attractive as the US! There is no reason why they can’t be. We are also working on taking it to the next level: standardization at the EU level through a single corporate entity. The “EU Inc.” initiative launched earlier this month and builds on the success of #NotOptional at Andreas Klinger European Accelerationism. Thankfully, the challenges European startups face are more in the spotlight than ever because of Mario Draghi’s report to the European Commission in September, which emphasized that innovative startups should have the opportunity to adopt a new EU-wide legal statute. Already, the European Commission has established a Stock Options Working Group, the European Securities and Markets Authority has urged the Commission to consider a dedicated EU-wide framework for ESOPs, and commission president Ursula von der Leyen appointed the first-ever commissioner for startups. Every improvement makes it easier for startups to attract and retain talent and makes it more likely that the next tech giant will come out of Europe. To everyone involved in this fight, congratulations on five years of progress. Now let’s keep going!

In a recent @Brutkasten article, I shared my view on the @European Union's Nature Restoration Law, and I'm proud that inoqo and Triple Impact Ventures stand with 375 Austrian companies supporting this initiative! The law aims to restore 20% of the EU's land and marine areas by 2030 and address all ecosystems in need by 2050. It's a bold step to revitalize our planet. Three biggest learnings from a fundraising journey. Shared by Rainer Märkle, General Partner at HV Capital at EUVC 1/ Have a time box with a deadline attached. Have a defined horizon & create a clear plan. Have some urgency to get things done at some point. Execute very transparently and reliably. 2/ Stick to your narrative. But don't do it blindly. Tweak it when necessary. Adapt it. Don't let yourself be surprised by major changes. Keep focusing on delivering according to your strategy & plan. 3/ Fundraising is a marathon with many sprints. There are moments when you'll ask yourself - Why do I do this? Is it gonna work out? But don't get too negative during the down phases. Adapting and pivoting is part of our job. 📢 What VCs Look for in Startups!   The VC perspective is unique and multifaceted, but there's one thing they all agree on: it's all about the people. The team is a crucial component of any successful startup.   Maria Heeschen-Ollendorff, our external expert on the Organisation & Team discipline and who has worked with due diligence on startup teams, shared her thoughts and reflections with the startups in GreenUP Accelerator.   Here are four of them:   ✨Team Dynamics✨: A balanced team with diverse competencies and personality profiles is essential. Each member brings something unique to the table, creating a robust foundation for innovation and growth. In GreenUP Accelerator, we make use of the TT38 competencies test to acquire insights on each startup's team and define their strengths.    ✨Shared Vision and Coherence✨: Reflect on why you have chosen each other as partners. Understanding the motivation behind your collaboration is vital. You could ask yourself: Are you in it for the long run? Do you share the same visions of purpose and leadership? Will you stick together when the going gets tough?   ✨Adaptability✨: You don't need to have tried everything, but you should have a clear plan for how you will approach new challenges. This adaptability and willingness to explore uncharted territories are critical. For example, you might not have tried selling before, but when meeting with VCs, show them how you have reflected on both your strengths and the gaps you are going to fill.    ✨Mutuality✨: Your relationship with your VC goes both ways. It's about mutual understanding and shared goals. Keep these points in mind as you build and refine your startup journey. 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲, 𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲! 🪑 Today we are going to launch the “Round Table – Founder-Friendly VC Feedback”. 🚀 This format will take place on the first day of the check-in event alongside two workshops on the topics of “Pitch Founder Personality” and “Start-up Valuation Methods”. What exactly is this “Round Table”, how does it work, who is involved, and what is the point of it? 🟠 Who? We will be welcoming four venture capitalists and seven teams from Phase 1 to the round table. The format will be moderated by Kathrin Schelbaum. 🟠 What? After an introduction and conversation with the representatives of the VCs, all start-ups will pitch for 3 minutes and then receive feedback from them. 🟠 Why? The aim of the format is to familiarise the start-ups with the topic of pitching and to prepare them for potential financing rounds in a fun way. They achieve this by receiving valuable feedback from the VCs on what they can improve regarding content and how they can communicate better in order to be more convincing verbally, for example. The primary aim is therefore not securing funding, but learning from representatives of real VCs and practising their pitches. And who knows, maybe there will be one or two opportunities after all ... 😉 We are very happy and grateful to have venture capitalists Dr. Maximilian Ochs, Emilie Cousin, Varun Gupta and Sebastian Büchte on board this time and therefore took the chance to dive deeper into the world of VCs. The German Startups Association, founded in 2012 and headquartered in Berlin, represents the interests of startups in Germany. It requires that member startups demonstrate a highly scalable business model and strong growth potential. The association has over 700 startup members and works to provide a voice for startups in relation to politics, civil society, and the established economy. An analysis by Global Corporate Venturing shows that having a corporate investor doubles a startup’s chances of success and increases the exit multiple. CVC (Corporate Venture Capital), which involves equity investments from established corporations, offers advantages beyond capital. These benefits vary across different business stages: - (Pre-)Seed Stage: CVC provides market validation, domain expertise, and opportunities for co-development, helping startups refine products and build credibility. - Early Growth Stage: CVC facilitates client acquisition, market insights, and access to corporate infrastructure, making scaling more efficient. - Growth Stage: Strategic partnerships, operational efficiency, and international expansion are key benefits that help startups scale faster. - Late Stage: CVC helps startups prepare for exits, providing guidance in market strategies, risk management, and potential acquisition opportunities. While CVC brings many advantages, startups must evaluate potential trade-offs based on their cap table and business nature.
